One person found this helpful. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. It worked great but it was bulky and when the belt broke on the brush roll, one of the screws was rusted to the bottom, I decided it was time for a new vacuum.

I did a lot of research and read so much about the Dyson. I live in a studio apartment and thought this was convenient due to its size. First, the wand is too short. I get spiderwebs in certain places and the Hoover had a long attachment which made it easy to get into places behind the dryer and in ceiling corners to suck up the webs. This one is a royal pain. Too stiff and too short, often the vacuum plops over to a side.

I spilled a glass of wine and went to my go-to remedy which I had done many times before with the Hoover: pour baking soda on the stain, let it dry and vacuum up the wine infused baking soda. I did this with the Dyson and there was baking soda wine mixture is in every crack and crevice of this thing.

I could see it in the brush roll.. It took me two hours to get all the baking soda caked inside the brush roll holder and outside of the canister. I had to take it apart and use a toothbrush, pipe cleaner, paper towels to get into hard places. If this thing was efficient, all the powder would not have visible through the plastic brushroll after I vacuumed the baking soda up, it would have ALL come out when I emptied the canister.

It seems like half the baking powder went into the canister, the rest was sprayed up into various places within the vacuum. While I was cleaning outside the canister, I noticed a nice little crack in the plastic. My place is only about square feet. I can only guess this happened one of the times the vacuum fell over when I was trying to reach the wand up into the ceiling corners..

Part of me wanted to give this thing a 2 not a 3 but I think 2. I did my best to research this vacuum as much as I could before buying it, but I decided to just bite the bullet and buy it, and I am glad I did!! This Dyson has thoroughly impressed me with how well it cleans. Right after moving in I "cleaned" my entire apartment with my battery-powered Shark that claims to "pick up what your vacuum cleaner misses!

BIG difference!!! I did not realize how much dust and how many hairballs were in the carpet makes me question if they even cleaned after the last tenant moved out!! My biggest gripe is that the hose extension is very, VERY awkward to use, as it collapses inside the hose tube and bends at really weird angles. Unlike other users, I had no problems assembling this vacuum.

The most time consuming part was connecting the brush head, but I eventually watched the official Dyson video and figured it out.

I like how sleek this vacuum and agile this vacuum is. The cord length is adequate, but I suppose it could be longer. Granted, having Amazon Prime helps a lot!! As I mentioned, I have had this vacuum for a little under a year. Recently the latch button on the cyclone assembly has gone missing, I assume it popped out while somebody was emptying the bin and fell in the trash unnoticed. At any rate, the button is no longer there, and so the assembly can no longer be attached to the body.

I figured this should be no problem to replace, after all I do have a 5 year warranty. Never mind the fact that the button that went missing is contained within a plastic handle that is easily detachable from the cyclone assembly. The 5 year warranty is a sham.

Having owned several Dyson vacuum cleaners over the past 10 years, I have a particular fondness for them. Recently I needed a new Dyson to use at a new business location and found the DC40 on sale so decided to try one of the ball units. Also it has a smaller compartment so it needs to be emptied more frequently if you have a large area to vacuum or lots of material to pickup such as animal hair.

The Bottom Line You could do a lot worse than the DC40; however, you could also do better and spend less. Visit for details. Click here for news about its latest products. The Electrolux was a top performer and the Shark performed on par with the DC40 for half the price. You could also do better, however, and spend less. The DC40 weighs This ball gives Dyson vacuums a wide range of pivoting motion, and make the DC40 exceedingly maneuverable.

I have concerns about the durability of this vacuum, however, and the ball is central to a few of them. If you use your vacuum like my family does, you constantly cart it up and down the stairs, accidentally bump it into things, and subject it to other, normal household wear-and-tear. Another design element that bothered me concerned the handle locking mechanism.

In order to lock the handle, you have to push it forward with some force until it clicks into place. The DC40 also makes a clicking sound when the small rear wheels go down, which is misleading. If I let go of the vacuum at that point, which I did many times, mistakenly thinking it was locked upright, the handle fell. Rather, I had to push the handle forward until I heard a second click, much fainter than the first. The same issue applies in the reverse, when you go to unlock the handle.

Call me old fashioned, but I felt much more secure with the locking mechanism and sturdiness of the Oreck, which required a more traditional step-and-press motion to unlock the vacuum. If plastic hardware is used in a vacuum, however, it needs to be sturdy. In my review of the DC50 Animal, I mentioned that the pin which depresses the button to open and empty the dust bin felt flimsy.

Stairs may prove more difficult and require you to move the vacuum as you get closer to the top or bottom, depending on where you start. This is incredibly convenient and keeps the hose out of the way, preventing it from becoming a tripping hazard. In addition, you must completely unwrap the power cord to access the wand as the top wrapping prong is located on the wand itself.

Nevertheless, the extension hose and attachments work well. The DC40 features a clear plastic dust bin, which you can access and empty easily. Deep cleaning the bin is easier than on the DC50, likely because of subtle differences in the hardware.

The ball is an excellent feature, enabling Dyson vacuums to turn on a dime and maneuver easily and without much effort on your part.
